Feb. 13 is Galentine’s Day, and the women who started the holiday trend shared a picture of them celebrating the occasion, according to E! News.
Galentine’s Day got its start on the NBC series “Parks and Recreation,” though it has since moved beyond the screen to become a fully commercialized holiday, according to The New York Times.
Aubrey Plaza shared a photo on Instagram with her “Parks and Rec” co-stars Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones and Kathryn Hahn, captioned “happy galentines day,” according to E! News.
The holiday was an invention of Poehler’s “Parks and Rec” character Leslie Knope as a day to celebrate female friendships. Knope described it on the show as “like Lilith Fair, minus the angst, plus frittatas,” according to Newsweek.
In the 10 years since Galentine’s Day premiered on the show, however, the holiday has entered the mainstream, The New York Times reported. Galentine’s Day accessories can now be purchased at Hallmark, Party City and more.
The creator and executive producer of “Parks and Recreation,” Michael Shur, told the Times that while he appreciates that people continue to enjoy the invented holiday, he has been a little concerned about the commodification of the day.
“Anytime anything you write sort of penetrates this disparate culture that we’re in and catches on and sort of is echoed back to you, that’s delightful,” Schur told the Times. “But it also was odd to see it sort of warped a little bit and converted into this thing that’s being used by brands and websites and corporations in order to have a sale on whatever it is they’re hawking. Because obviously, that wasn’t the point of it.”
