Captain America may be bringing his shield and armor to Fortnite once again to celebrate the Fourth of July, according to ComicBook.com.

What’s happening:

  • Leaks from dataminers — who search through video game data for clues of what’s to come — report that Captain America may appear in the free-to-play Fortnite video game this weekend, ComicBook.com reports.
  • According to the report, “The game’s latest update doesn’t contain any files specifically referencing Captain America, but an in-game asset of the Marvel hero’s iconic shield has been discovered. Of course, it’s possible this is all the game will be adding, but the safer bet is this is part of a larger cosmetic drop for the character featuring, most notably, a new skin.”

Fortnite has a history with comic book characters:

  • Fortnite has had plenty of crossover events that include some comic book characters. For example, one of the earliest events included Thanos, as I wrote for the Deseret News. Similarly, a Batman anniversary event brought Batman and Catwoman to the game. There was even a crossover with “Star Wars” characters, too.
  • Fortnite also had an “Avengers: Endgame” crossover where gamers took on the roles of Iron Man and Captain America, using each of the characters’ weapons, as I reported for the Deseret News.
