“Tenet” will likely be the first new movie to hit screens everywhere, according to Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi.
What’s going on:
- Zoradi told Business Insider that there will likely be enough movie theater screens available to show “Tenet,” the newest movie from Christopher Nolan, a new spy thriller.
- “Tenet” has long been considered the first major blockbuster film of the summer, which would arrive in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Zoradi said Cinemark is approaching the release with optimism.
- He said: “We’ve been in close contact with Warner Bros. and they remain optimistic and positive as well as Christopher Nolan about the July 17 opening. Of course, it depends on the continued positive movement due to the decline of COVID-19 and government restrictions being reduced.”
Testing the waters for ‘Tenet’
- Movie theaters have hoped to test the waters with different promotions before “Tenet” is released. According to Film School Rejects, theater owners want to figure out a game plan so they can be prepared for “Tenet” when it hits theaters.
- “Cinemas could just reopen their doors that week and see what happens, but instead, the common strategy appears to be about slowly phased operations in order to warm up and prepare.”
The push for ‘Tenet’
According to CinemaBlend, Warner Bros. and movie theaters have a lot of stake in “Tenet.” The film was considered one of the banner films for the production company. And theaters have seen a loss in revenue since the pandemic began since they had to close down their screens.
Per CinemaBlend:
“Major movie theater chains have lost so much money from their closures that they too want ‘Tenet’ to happen on schedule. And a good number of states are in the middle of ramping up the opening of non-essential businesses, thanks to currently declining rates of the current health crisis.
“How those statements change, and how successful the path to theatrical reopenings fares, will depend on whatever happens in the weeks spanning between now and ‘Tenet.’”
