It appears that Matt Damon’s foray into the MCU is not over yet.

On Jan. 17, the actor was spotted disembarking a private jet with his family in Sydney. According to IGN, Damon and his family are currently passing time at a private facility where they’ll be spending a mandatory 14-day quarantine period designed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. According to the site, Damon is expected to head out to the “Thor: Love and Thunder” shoot once the two-week quarantine expires.

Upon arrival, the Academy Award winner expressed his excitement to be in Australia with local press. He said (via IGN):

“I’m so excited that my family and I will be able to call Australia home for the next few months. ...Australian film crews are world-renowned for their professionalism and are a joy to work with so the 14 days of quarantine will be well worth it.”

In 2017, Damon made a very brief appearance in the third installment of the Thor trilogy, “Thor: Ragnarok.” In the Taika Waititi-directed film, Damon portrayed an Asgardian actor who was participating in a humorous stage retelling of the events that unfolded in the previous Thor movie.

Collider’s Adam Chitwood suggests that Damon’s willingness to fly across the world and spend two weeks in quarantine could indicate that the actor will have a more prominent role in the upcoming film. He wrote:

“(Damon’s) short but incredibly funny cameo ... was shot in the United States as part of some additional photography, so one imagines if Damon is flying down to Australia and spending two weeks quarantining, it could be for a more substantial role.”

According to Screen Rant, “Thor: Love and Thunder” boasts an all-star cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Tessa Thompson and Christian Bale. As announced at Disney’s recent Investor Day presentation, Bale will be playing the Gorr the God Butcher, the film’s central villain.

Syfy recently reported that the plot for “Thor: Love and Thunder” will be (at least loosely) based on the “Mighty Thor” comic book series. In the comic, Jane Foster (who’s portrayed on the screen by Natalie Portman) becomes Lady Thor while battling cancer.

According to IGN, “Thor: Love and Thunder” is planned for release on May 6, 2022.
