Fortnite released the sixth season of its second chapter on Tuesday, bringing gamers into a primal world complete with animals, “Tomb Raider” Lara Croft and, yes, the soccer star Neymar.

What’s going on?

Fortnite — the free-to-play battle royale video game — unveiled its sixth season on Tuesday. This is the sixth season of the game’s second “chapter” of seasons, which began in late 2019.

  • The new season — called Primal — will feature a new location called The Spire, which has new locations surrounding it. Animals now roam Fortnite — from chickens and dogs to wolves and boars, according to The Verge.
  • People can now build their own weapons by using hunted wildlife and old technology. So yeah, you can literally go hunting.

Context

Fortnite launched its fifth season of Chapter 2 in early December. The season added two popular “Star Wars” characters — The Child and the Mandalorian — into the game since the season centered around bounty hunting, as I wrote about for the Deseret News.

At the time, The Express reported that leaked data files showed that the fifth season would end on March 16, which ended up being the case since the sixth season launched around 4 a.m. on March 16.

Fortnite suffered delays for its new seasons in early 2020. For example, Season 3 was delayed for multiple weeks, as I wrote about for the Deseret News. This was likely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
