A new round of “The Voice” started Monday night, and there was one major change: Kelly Clarkson was gone.

Why Kelly Clarkson isn’t on ‘The Voice’

  • The “Voice” coach, who has won the show three times, was under the weather and unable to film the start of the Battle Rounds.
  • “While she didn’t test positive for COVID, as you can imagine we have some really strict guidelines on our set,” host Carson Daly announced during the episode, USA Today reported. ”Kelly is staying at home, where she’s watching the battles remotely.”
  • Clarkson attended battle rehearsals and coached her team ahead of the performances, Entertainment Weekly reported.
  • Going into the Battle Rounds, Clarkson asked her friend, country-pop singer Kelsea Ballerini, to temporarily fill in. The two have a performing history together, and Ballerini was a part of Clarkson’s tour that stopped in Salt Lake City in 2019, the Deseret News reported.
  • On Monday night, Ballerini posted on Twitter that she will be filling in for the “next few weeks of Battle Rounds.”

Ariana Grande joins ‘The Voice’

  • On Tuesday, “The Voice” announced another big change to the coaching lineup.
  • Ariana Grande will be replacing Nick Jonas for Season 21 of “The Voice.”
  • “I am beyond thrilled, honored, excited to be joining @kellyclarkson @johnlegend @blakeshelton next season — season 21 of @nbcthevoice!” Grande wrote on Twitter. “@nickjonas we will miss you.”
  • Although Jonas hasn’t said why is leaving after this season, this isn’t the first time he’s left “The Voice.” After making his “Voice” debut during the 18th season, he left the following season and was replaced by Gwen Stefani, according to the Deseret News.
  • Congrats @ArianaGrande! You’re going to kill it next season!” Jonas wrote on Twitter. “Welcome to the family.”
