“Hamilton” is celebrating 10 years on stage by making the move to the big screen.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s creator and original star, announced during an appearance on “The Tonight Show” Tuesday that the movie version of the award-winning Broadway musical (which was originally released on Disney+) will be coming to movie theaters for the first time.

“We filmed most of the original cast performing in ‘Hamilton’ in 2016,” Miranda said during his “Tonight Show” interview, per Variety, “and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted.

“But, Sept. 5, you will be able to see ‘Hamilton’ in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.”

Miranda said the theatrical release is part of the celebrations for the 10-year anniversary of the musical, which debuted on Broadway Aug. 6, 2015. “Hamilton” went on to win the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for drama and 11 Tony Awards, including for best musical, evolving into a cultural phenomenon, the Deseret News reported.

Other anniversary celebrations have included a reunion performance at the Tony Awards earlier this year, where Miranda and nearly 30 other original cast members, including Leslie Odom Jr., Jonathan Groff and Renée Elise Goldsberry, performed a medley of songs from the show, as the Deseret News reported at the time.

And starting Sept. 9, Odom will return to “Hamilton” on Broadway to reprise his role as Aaron Burr, for which he previously earned a Tony Award for leading actor in a musical, according to People magazine.

The movie version of the hit musical, which is a “live capture” of a performance with most of the original cast members, including Miranda, was released on Disney+ in July 2020 and had originally been scheduled for a theatrical release in October 2021, per Variety.

“Hamilton” will now be in movie theaters starting Sept. 5, with tickets available Wednesday.
