Angel Studios Inc., the Utah-based distribution company behind the films “The King of Kings” and “Sound of Freedom,” has taken another stride toward going public.

In a plan announced Monday, Angel Studios said it will hold a special meeting with shareholders seeking approval on a proposed merger between Angel and Southport Acquisition Corporation, a special purpose acquisition company.

The meeting for Angel shareholders is set for Sept. 5, during which investors will vote on the proposed merger.

If approved, the merger transaction is “anticipated to close shortly thereafter,” which will result in Angel Studios stock being traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ exchange under the ticker symbol “ANGX.”

Angel Studios co-founder and CEO Neal Harmon is encouraging shareholders to read over proxy materials and voice their opinions through casting votes on the proposed merger in September.

“It’s time to vote and it’s important that our investors participate and help chart the future of Angel,” Harmon said in a statement.

He continued, “Together, we’re reshaping the entertainment landscape by empowering audiences to champion, support, and improve the stories they want to see make the world a better place. Thank you for being part of the movement to tell stories that amplify light.”

Angel Studios started the proposed merger process in 2024 and has since grown significantly, it says.

The company’s Guild membership — a group of subscribers who get to vote on which projects Angel Studios should produce and distribute — has grown from 222,000 to approximately 1.5 million members across 180 countries.

Revenue has also increased. Angel generated $87.4 million during the second quarter of 2025, compared to $15.3 million earned in the second quarter of 2024.

Angel has also experienced a surge in app downloads, with app installs up to 70.5 million as of this summer.

The Utah-based entertainment company has found success creating and distributing family-friendly, faith-heavy cinema such as “Sound of Freedom,” “The King of Kings,” “Cabrini,” “Tuttle Twins,” “Sight” and “The Last Rodeo.”

“Sound of Freedom” debuted theatrically in 2023, raking in nearly $20 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend.

It earned more than $250 million worldwide during its theatrical run and ended the year as the 10th highest earning film domestically in 2023 — outperforming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Mission: Impossible — The Dead Reckoning Part 1."

In March this year, the animated movie about Jesus Christ, “The King of Kings,” broke the record for highest-grossing debut for an animated biblical film, making over $19 million in ticket sales during its domestic debut.

Angel Studios, which describes itself as “a values-based distribution company for stories that amplify light to mainstream audiences,” has several movies on the docket slated to come out during the second half of 2025.
