Bestselling fantasy author Brandon Sanderson is giving readers a peek into one of his upcoming books.

During Seattle Worldcon, a science fiction convention that took place last month, Sanderson held the first public reading of an excerpt from “Ghostbloods,” which will be his third trilogy in “The Mistborn Saga.” And on Monday, the “Ghostbloods” excerpt was posted on Sanderson’s website.

“Ghostbloods” will be set roughly 50 years after the events of the second “Mistborn” series, per Sanderson’s website, placing the story in a more modern era.

“I realized I had never seen a fantasy series where the foundations of religion and government are laid in an epic fantasy, and then you jump forward in time to see the science fiction version of that world,” Sanderson told the Worldcon audience about his inspiration behind “The Mistborn Saga.”

Earlier this year, Sanderson revealed that he expected the first “Ghostbloods” book to be released in 2028. He said at the time that he intended to finish writing all three books in the new trilogy before publishing the first book.

“My goal is to write the three books straight through,” he said at Worldcon, “then hand them off to production to do continuity and the like.”

What is ‘The Mistborn Saga’?

Sanderson’s “Mistborn Saga” is currently comprised of two separate book series, as the Deseret News previously reported: the original trilogy and the “Wax and Wayne” series. “Ghostbloods” will be the third series in the saga.

The original series is a “hybrid epic fantasy heist story,” per Sanderson’s website, and is made up of three books, plus a novella. The “Wax and Wayne” series is set in the same world as the original trilogy, but takes place 300 years later, and is made up of four books.

Sanderson will be releasing a collection of short stories, titled “Tailored Realities,” on Dec. 9. The collection will include the novella “Moment Zero,” as well as nine other works of short fiction that go “beyond the bounds of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe,” according to the publisher.

In February 2026, Sanderson will release a standalone novel, “Isles of the Emberdark,” which fits into his Cosmere universe and was originally released as one of his “secret project” books.

Also in February, Sanderson will be the keynote speaker at StoryCon, which is Utah’s largest writing conference, according to KSL.com.

Meanwhile, Sanderson will be making an appearance at pop culture and comic convention FanX in Salt Lake City in September, and will host his own annual convention, Dragonsteel Nexus, in December.
