As the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots face off during the Super Bowl on Sunday, a Washington native and pop star will also take the spotlight — for a 30-second comedic showdown with Ben Stiller.
Benson Boone, Ben Stiller are starring in a Super Bowl ad for Instacart
Singer Benson Boone, who in 2024 broke through with the monster hit “Beautiful Things,” recently concluded a massive world tour for his second album, “American Heart.”
Now, much to Stiller’s dismay, Boone is showing off his vocal prowess — and affinity for flips — in a Super Bowl ad for Instacart.
In the Spike Jonze-directed commercial, Boone and Stiller play brothers John and Gary who form a 1980s-style Europop duo. Wearing matching green suits, the brothers are filming a music video about Instacart’s newest feature, Preference Picker, when Stiller’s character becomes visibly agitated by his brother’s high-soaring vocals and flips.
A recently released extended cut of the commercial, which has more than 3 million views on YouTube, shows Stiller climbing onto a raised platform to do a massive flip — after two already failed attempts at flipping.
“Everybody wants me to do a flip for Instacart!” Stiller’s character says.
“Nobody wants you to do the flip!” Boone’s character responds.
Stiller’s attempt brings him crashing right down into the drum set and, eventually, completely off the stage.
While Stiller’s character may be frustrated with Boone in the ad, the actor had nothing but praise for the artist.
“First of all, let me say, if anybody’s annoyed with his flipping, it’s flip envy,” Stiller told Today. “Nobody could do what he does. Come on. It’s crazy. I’ve seen it up close. It’s insane.”
Stiller is also a big fan of Boone’s vocals.
“He’s just so good, and it comes so naturally to him, and he’s so young, and it just kind of flows out,” Stiller said of the 23-year-old singer.
Other teasers for the Super Bowl ad have been released — including one that shows Stiller and Boone bickering over the range in which they should perform the song. The 30-second ad will air during the first quarter of the game, per Billboard.
Boone has previously showed off his comedic acting chops in his hit song “Mr. Electric Blue,” which he released this past summer
In the music video for the song, which was filmed in Utah, the singer took some of the biggest criticisms people have hurled his way during his short career and transformed them into a hilarious storyline that has more 10 million views on YouTube.
“Is everything all right?” Boone says to his agent as he steps into Industry Plant Records wearing a T-shirt that says “One hit wonder.”
“Have you not been on the internet?” the agent responds. “Everything’s terrible, Benson! We put all of our money in Moonbeam ice cream and a backflip, and it’s gone absolutely horrible. We need something new, we need a new gimmick. Maybe good songwriting?”
“You know I can’t do that,” a deflated Boone says.
At the Super Bowl, Boone is also taking part in the celebrity flag football game Saturday night. The game, which is part of the NFL and YouTube’s partnership, will air 8 p.m. on YouTube, per Variety.
Is Benson Boone interested in doing a Super Bowl halftime show?
Boone’s Super Bowl ad slot gives viewers a brief taste of his artistry.
But does the singer have any interest in performing at the actual game one day?
“I think down the line — like, far down the line — I could really rip a Super Bowl halftime show," the singer told Billboard.
