Following Netflix’s recent announcement of its latest project bringing Willy Wonka’s candy emporium back to life, here is a look back at previous Roald Dahl film adaptations and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” on the big screen.

Netflix’s animated version of Wonka’s wondrous world, “Charlie vs. The Chocolate Factory,” centers on a sequel following the chocolatier’s life after his interactions with Charlie Bucket and the other children.

The streaming service gave a first look of the film’s animation style along with a brief plot description:

“Willy Wonka has returned to his factory after years behind bars for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world, only one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley and a new generation of ‘rotten’ kids.”

The film features the voices of Kit Connor as Charlie Paley and Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka, according to Netflix.

Online reaction has been mixed. One user on X questioned the frequency of remakes, writing, “am i missing something??? why are we constantly reheating wonka’s nachos???”

Another user said they are “weirdly excited for this now,” but added a note of skepticism: “if this is anything like the last Netflix Roald Dahl adaptation i’m out.”

Netflix’s previous Dahl adaptations

Netflix is no stranger to Dahl adaptations.

The streaming giant’s first venture into the author’s work was the 2022 release of “Matilda the Musical,” followed by the Wes Anderson short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” The most recent addition was last year’s animated spin-off of “The Twits.”

Netflix’s expansion of the Dahl universe follows its acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021, according to Variety.
