Utah fantasy author Brandon Sanderson shared a big update on the progress of the upcoming movie based on his bestselling novel “Mistborn.”
“After many months of work, I’m thrilled to announce the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay is DONE!” Sanderson posted on X on Tuesday.
The rights to “Mistborn” were picked up by Apple TV earlier this year in an “unprecedented deal,” part of which included giving Sanderson an unusual level of control over the adaptation, including allowing him to write the screenplay, as the Deseret News reported in February.
“This is just an early step in a long process,” Sanderson posted about the screenplay draft, “but I’m terribly excited by how it turned out!”
Sanderson shared a video update later on Tuesday where he talked more about what to expect next for “Mistborn,” cautioning fans that there is still a long way to go.
“Screenplays go through a lot of drafts,” he said in the video. “There’s still a lot of work to do, but getting the screenplay done is a huge deal for me.”
A producer for the movie has been hired, but a search for a director hasn’t begun yet, and likely won’t until further along in the screenplay’s revision process, Sanderson said earlier this month, per ScreenRant.
In his X post, Sanderson noted that he had finished the screenplay “just in time to celebrate the book’s original publication, twenty years ago this month.”
“Mistborn” will be a full-length movie adapted by Apple TV, and Sanderson has previously said that he wants to be “deeply involved” in the adaptation, as well as the streaming TV series of “The Stormlight Archive” that’s also in the works with Apple.
“I’m going to be making sure these things come out right,” he said in February.
