OREM — The groundbreaking ceremony for the Orem Utah Temple will held on Sept. 5, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Wednesday.
Attendance will be by invitation only. The Utah Area President, Elder Craig C. Christensen, will preside.
The temple’s construction is moving quickly. The site was announced by President Russell M. Nelson in October 2019. The location was revealed two months later.
The temple will be located on 16 acres at 1471 South Geneva Road, half a mile south of I-15’s University Parkway exit near the nexus of major population, commercial and industrial growth in Provo, Orem and Vineyard. The site is almost directly west across the freeway from the Orem Walmart.
Plans include a three-story temple of about 70,000 square feet with a center spire. A 20,000-square-foot meetinghouse is to be constructed on the temple site as well.
Utah currently has 17 operating temples. Seven more have been announced or are under construction.
