Groundbreaking plans are scheduled in May and June for the Deseret Peak Utah Temple and the Syracuse Utah Temple, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced on Tuesday.
The Deseret Peak Temple groundbreaking is scheduled in May. Elder Brook P. Hales of the Quorum of the Seventy will preside at the ceremony.
The Syracuse Temple groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled in June. Elder Kevin R. Duncan of the Quorum of the Seventy will preside at the event.
The ceremonies will be private and attendance will be by invitation only due to local COVID-19 guidelines.
The Deseret Peak Temple previously was named the Tooele Valley Utah Temple but its original site was moved and the name changed after some local residents opposed the church’s plan to build a housing development around it. The church has dropped the development.

The temple’s new location is west of the intersection of 2400 North 400 West in Tooele.
President Russell M. Nelson announced a Tooele-area temple, the 21st in Utah, during the church’s April 2019 general conference.
The location change did not change plans for the exterior and interior designs. The temple will be three stories with about 70,000 square feet. A 20,000-square-foot meetinghouse will be built on the site.
The church released renderings of interior designs in April 2020.
President Nelson announced the Syracuse Utah Temple during the April 2020 general conference. It will be the 24th Latter-day Saint temple in Utah.

The church released a rendering of the Syracuse Temple last month. Also a three-story building, it will be larger than the Deseret Peak Temple at approximately 89,000 square feet.
The Syracuse Temple will be built on 12 acres at the intersection of 2500 West and 1025 South in Syracuse, Utah. The location was announced in August 2020.
Construction will begin on both temples soon after the groundbreaking ceremonies.
Utah has 17 operating temples. Construction is underway on new temples in Layton, Orem, St. George (Red Cliffs), Saratoga Springs and Taylorsville. Another temple in the state has been announced for Lindon.
