For the first time, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Thursday used the leadership session of a general conference to announce new Area Seventies.
Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles read the names of 77 new Area Seventies at the start of the leadership session of the 191st Annual General Conference at the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The new leaders represent 25 countries worldwide. President Russell M. Nelson led a sustaining vote during the meeting.
Previously, calling and sustaining Area Seventies took place on the Saturday of general conference weekend, although the new Area Seventies also will be sustained as a group during the conference, according to a church statement.
What is an Area Seventy?
Area Seventies live at home and maintain their non-religious vocations while serving in one of the church’s geographic areas throughout the world. They are not considered general authorities, who have authority to serve anywhere in the world. Their authority is generally limited to the area where they serve.
Area Seventies serve on a church-service basis for a designated number of years, similar to a bishop or stake president. Under the direction of the area presidency or Presidency of the Seventy, Area Seventies are assigned to consult with and instruct stake presidents in their area.
The church has 12 quorums of the Seventy. The first two quorums are made up of General Authority Seventies and the third through the twelfth consist of Area Seventies.

The church called 55 new Area Seventies from 27 countries during the April 2019 general conference.
What are leadership sessions?
General conference typically begins with leadership sessions held on the Wednesday and Thursday before the five weekend public sessions. Instruction and training is provided to about 300 general authorities and Area Seventies by the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and general officers of the Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School, Young Women and Young Men organizations of the church.
- Last year, the church canceled the leadership sessions before both general conferences in due to COVID-19 health restrictions on travel and gathering.
- Thursday’s session looked like the public general conference sessions during 2020: A small number of leaders gathered at church headquarters in SLC while wearing masks and social distancing. The general authorities and area seventies around the world participated virtually.
The general sessions of this weekend’s conference will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The priesthood session for men and boys 11 and older will begin Saturday at 6 p.m. Conference adjourns after the final two sessions on Sunday.
