A new list reveals the safest vehicles of 2026, according to one safety group.
Tesla’s Cybertruck made the cut.
Out of 63 total vehicles that qualified for an award, the Cybertruck was one of 11 fully electric vehicles to win an award.
The entire list can be found here.
The list will be updated throughout the year as more vehicles are tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Here are the other 10 EVs that were named a top safety pick by the IIHS:
- Genesis GV60
- Genesis Electrified GV70
- Hyundai Ioniq 5
- Hyundai Ioniq 9
- Kia EV9
- 2027 Audi Q6 e-tron
- 2027 Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron
- Rivian R1S
- Volvo EX90
- Ford Mustang Mach-E
In total, there were only two pickup trucks given awards, the Cybertruck and the Toyota Tundra crew cab.
A greater emphasis on back seat safety
Tests include crash simulations with dummies and emergency braking situations involving motorcycles and semi-trucks.
Cars reach speeds up to 43 mph in these tests.
A greater emphasis was put on back seat safety this year, according to multiple reports.
“The Institute updated its moderate overlap front test in 2022 to emphasize back seat safety,” Monday’s news release from the IIHS stated.
Harkey also said that consumers shouldn’t have to spend more for the best protection.
“This year, we’re asking automakers to make excellent protection for back seat passengers the norm,” IIHS President David Harkey said.
Although minivans are generally seen as family cars, none received awards, partly due to struggling to perform in the moderate overlap test.
