I read that Utah Sen. Mike Lee intends to run for a third U.S. Senate term in 2022. Mike Lee has done a great job as a senator for two terms. But in 2010, Lee promised to serve for no more than two terms. Sen. Lee should keep that promise, if only for his word’s sake.

As a 2010 delegate to the Utah state Republican convention, I remember well candidate Lee’s impassioned and courageous words that helped to oust three-term incumbent Sen. Bob Bennett from the convention. Lee promised to serve for only two terms and ripped Bennett for violating his same 1992 promise to serve for only two terms. Candidate Lee vociferously pledged to the delegates, and later the voters, that unlike Bennett, Mike Lee would keep his two-term promise.

It’s time for Mike Lee to pay up on that promise. Just like he made a bewildered Bob Bennett pay up on his. Sen. Lee’s two terms are up in 2022. Lee should not pull another “Bob Bennett” by breaking his promise to try for an extra term.

Again, Lee has done a great job as a Utah senator. If only there were more in the U.S. Senate like him. But a promise is a promise, and the best way to clean up the mess in D.C. is for elected leaders to keep their promises. There will be other Mike Lees; he should take the road less traveled and keep his promise. That will make all the difference.
