I was so happy to see the recent ruling against gerrymandering in Utah. Utah leaders like to say that Utah is an example to other states. In this particular instance this statement is absolutely true, and it couldn’t have come at a more important time. But let’s be clear — this anti-gerrymandering decision came not because of, but in spite of Utah’s elected leadership. Thank heavens for Utah’s ballot initiative process and for the Utah judiciary. These both have proven their absolute worth as important checks and balances, and deserve our protection from future legislative power grabs.
