A new poll from The Argument/Verasight shows Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., beating Vice President JD Vance by 2% in a hypothetical matchup for president in 2028.

The 1,521 registered voters were polled between Dec. 5 and 11, and the margin of error was plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. The poll asked who voters would choose if the election came down to the two of them.

When asked what she thinks of the poll, Ocasio-Cortez responded, “Listen, these polls, like three years out, they are what they are. But let the record show, I would stomp him. I would stomp him!”

The survey’s pollster, data analyst Lakysha Jain, published the poll’s crosstabs on X Wednesday.

Ocasio-Cortez brought in 79% of Black respondents and 64% of Hispanics, while Vance brought in 21% and 36%, respectively.

Though both Ocasio-Cortez and Vance are millennials, AOC brought in 2% more millennial respondents and 16% more Gen Z respondents than Vance. They split the 45-64 age range equally, and Vance brought in 4% more of the 65-plus group than Ocasio-Cortez.

The poll may be a one-off

While no one has cast their hat into the ring for the 2028 presidential election yet, early polling shows other potential candidates winning the Democratic primary by a wide margin.

A Big Data Poll from last Sunday shows former Vice President Kamala Harris winning the Democratic primary by 11 percentage points, and an Emerson poll from Dec. 3 shows California Gov. Gavin Newsom winning by 20 percentage points. Another St. Anselm poll from Nov. 23 shows former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg winning by 4 percentage points.

In the most favorable AOC polling published on Real Clear Politics, a University of New Hampshire survey found Ocasio-Cortez tied with Newsom in the Democratic primary, both bringing in 17% of the vote.
