In case you haven't had enough football yet, there's this: Today marks the opening game of the United Football League, featuring the California Redwoods and the Las Vegas Locomotives.

The goal of the new league is to meet the needs of markets "underserved" in terms of pro football.

If you haven't heard of the UFL, at least you've heard of some of its people. Head coach of the Locomotives is former Ute coach Jim Fassel. Not surprisingly, he has five former Utes on his team: center Jesse Boone, receiver Brian Hernandez, nose tackle Gabe Long, tight end John Madsen and offensive tackle Lauvale Sape.

The Florida Tuskers include BYU's Colby Bockwoldt, a linebacker, as well as defensive end Josh Savage, a former Ute.

If the future of the league seems iffy, that's because it is. There are currently only four teams. They are said to represent the Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco and Orlando metropolitan markets.

Just a guess: Four teams isn't much of a league.

I figure this one is going to go the way of the old USFL.

Except faster.
