In the opening minutes of No. 12 BYU’s game against Texas State Saturday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium, the 6,000 fans in attendance — the first home contest this season that Cougar faithful had been allowed inside due to the pandemic — must have wondered if their eyes were deceiving them when the Bobcats seized a quick 7-0 lead.

But if those fans fretted at all, they did so in vain.

Just like BYU scored 29 unanswered points in the second half of its victory over Houston last week, the Cougars reeled off 49 consecutive points after that early deficit and cruised to a dominating 52-14 win over the overmatched Sun Belt foe.

BYU improved to 6-0 this season while Texas State dropped to 1-6.

In a little more than two quarters, Cougar quarterback Zach Wilson completed 19 of 25 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Dax Milne caught four passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, tight end Isaac Rex had five receptions for 66 yards and two TDs and running back Tyler Allgeier rushed 12 times for 76 yards and a touchdown.

BYU gained 579 yards of total offense and limited Texas State to 267 yards.

Leading by 28 points to start the third quarter, BYU didn’t let up. Wilson threw a 30-yard TD pass to Rex and with 10:47 remaining in the period, the Cougars extended their lead to 42-7.

Then BYU’s defense got on the scoreboard moments later when Isaiah Kaufusi intercepted a pass and picked his way 32 yards into the end zone. That pick-six propelled the Cougars to a 49-7 lead.

Adjustments made: How BYU shut down Texas State after a shaky start

Wilson was taken out of the game midway through the third quarter and was replaced by backup Baylor Romney.

Texas State finally scored again with eight minutes remaining to cut the deficit to 49-14.

Later, punter Ryan Rehkow executed a fake punt with six minutes remaining and ran for 49 yards, BYU’s longest run of the season. Jake Oldroyd drilled a 28-yard field goal and the Cougars went up 52-14.

In the early going, Texas State was the team that looked unstoppable. The Bobcats displayed funky formations, including offensive linemen lining up wide at times. With an effective mix of runs and throws, Texas State marched downfield with ease, culminating in a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brady McBride to Marcell Barbee.

And just like that, the Bobcats jumped out to a surprising 7-0 lead over BYU.

But the Cougars calmly responded with an 86-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 4-yard run by Lopini Katoa to tie the game.

Late in the first quarter, Wilson engineered a 90-yard drive. On fourth-and-3, Wilson connected with Keanu Hill for a 33-yard TD to lift BYU to a 14-7 advantage.

The Cougars started to pour it on the second quarter with three more touchdowns.

On its next possession, BYU coughed up the ball on a botched snap. Wilson mishandled the shotgun snap and Texas State recovered at the Cougars’ 10-yard line. But BYU’s defense held, keeping the Bobcats out of the end zone.

The Cougars added to their lead as Wilson threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Milne with 27 seconds remaining and BYU took a 35-7 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Cougars host Western Kentucky next Saturday.
