The BYU Cougars are now in the top 10 of both major polls.
This marks the first time since 2009 that BYU has been in the top 10 of the AP poll. The Cougars got as high as No. 7 that season.
Boise State, who BYU will play this week, is ranked No. 21 in the AP poll, up four spots from last week.
The Cougars’ move up comes after they once again cruised past an opponent, beating the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 41-10. BYU took the No. 9 spot in the AP poll from the Wisconsin Badgers, whose game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday was canceled because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Badger program.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys dropped from No. 6 to No. 14 after losing in overtime Saturday to the unranked Texas Longhorns.
The Broncos’ win Saturday over the Air Force Falcons set up a top 25 matchup that is the marquee game on the Cougars’ schedule this season.
Among other AP poll highlights:
- The top five of the Clemson Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ohio State Buckeyes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs was unchanged from last week.
- The Cincinnati Bearcats, the top-ranked Group of Five team, moved up one spot to No. 6. They’ll face the Houston Cougars this week.
- The Utah Utes received 44 votes in the AP poll, good enough for ninth-most after the Top 25 as the Pac-12 Conference readies for its season to open this week. Elsewhere in the Pac-12, the Oregon Ducks rose from No. 14 to No. 12 and the USC Trojans went from No. 21 to No. 20. The Washington Huskies received 21 votes, just behind Utah, the Arizona State Sun Devils got seven and the Cal Golden Bears snuck in with three.
