The 2020 high school baseball season gets underway this week for teams in Class 5A. To prepare fans for the upcoming season, the Deseret News has put together capsules for every team in 5A. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information.

The region rankings are based on coaches preseason projections.

There are five new baseball coaches in 5A this year: Pat Treend (East), Ben Voegele (Hillcrest), Brock Whitney (Mountain Ridge), Beau McCoy (Mountain View) and Morgan Ventura (Timpview).

Here are the 5A teams and players to watch this upcoming season.


Region 5

1. Farmington Phoenix

In 2019 the Hawks started six sophomores most games and competed to a 13-11 season. With lots of hard work over the summer and a solid finish in the 2019 American Legion tournament this past August, the Hawks have been focused over the winter on improving their win total for 2020. Improved pitching depth and solid defensive play should be the Hawks’ key assets. Relying on the core that returns to the roster as well as a few key additions, Alta is looking forward to a very competitive 2020 season, punctuated by a strong showing in the UHSAA 5A state tournament in May.”


5. Mountain Ridge Sentinels
