SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah High School Activities Association will extend its suspension of spring sports, including practice and team gatherings, through May 1 as part of the statewide prevention efforts of COVID-19, the organization announced Tuesday morning.

This comes less than 24 hours after Gov. Gary Herbert announced that the state’s K-12 schools will be closed through May 1, and the UHSAA’s decision lines up with that directive.

“In consultation with board directives and information provided by state public health officials, the UHSAA has suspended spring activities and athletics, including practice and team gatherings, to properly fulfill best practices regarding protection of students and the general public,” the UHSAA said in a statement. “More information will be sent to member schools and/or districts as it becomes available.”

This extends the UHSAA’s original suspension of the spring high school sports schedule. On March 12, the UHSAA said it would suspend spring sports for two weeks.
