SALT LAKE CITY — The sports world has been rocked the past 24 hours with the suspension of professional and college sports around the country because of the spread of the COVID-19 virus. It has now trickled down to high school sports.
Based on the recommendation from state superintendent Sydnee Dickson to postpone mass gatherings involving high school athletics for at least two weeks, the UHSAA announced today that all spring sports would be suspended for two weeks beginning on Monday, March 16.
This weekend’s state debate meet has also been postponed.
“In consultation with board directives and information provided by state public health officials, the UHSAA has suspended spring activities to properly fulfill best practices regarding protection of students and the general public. More information will be sent to member schools and/or districts as it becomes available,” said a press release sent to the media.
The UHSAA said it’s up to the individual schools and districts whether to still hold sporting events this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There are over 300 baseball, soccer, softball and lacrosse games schedule this weekend — many of them in St. George at tournaments.
