The Dallas Cowboys are looking for a new head coach, and their search includes someone they’re already quite familiar with.
Dallas has requested to interview Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for its head coaching vacancy, according to a Thursday report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Moore was previously on the Cowboys’ coaching staff from 2018-22, serving as offensive coordinator for four seasons.
He was also a backup quarterback in Dallas from 2015-17.
In his first season calling plays for the Eagles — having replaced former Utah Utes quarterback Brian Johnson — Moore’s Philadelphia unit averaged 26.9 points per game and won the NFC East division title with a 14-3 record.
Moore is best known for his record-breaking collegiate career at Boise State, where he won 50 games as the Broncos’ starting quarterback and passed for 14,667 yards and 142 touchdowns between 2008-11.
Moore is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the Deseret News reported in July 2024.
“(Moore) is really well-respected across the league,” said Eagles punt returner/receiver Britain Covey, a member of the church and former Ute, at the time. “I feel like I’ll be able to learn a lot from him.”
Because of his church connection, some BYU fans have dreamed of Moore possibly leaving professional football to come coach for the Cougars.
One such dreamer is Hall of Fame QB and BYU legend Steve Young, who made his stance on the matter very clear during a radio appearance this past September.
“I’ll whisper it to you guys — (Moore) needs to be a future coach at BYU,” Young said. “We won’t worry about that right now.”
Of course, should Moore end up as the Cowboys' head coach, any sort of future in Provo would appear very unlikely.
Dallas has put together an interesting group of coaching candidates, including franchise legend Jason Witten and Colorado’s Deion Sanders.
However, a number of experts have projected that Moore will ultimately receive the job, including Dan Graziano of ESPN.
“Moore makes a ton of sense at this very early stage,” Graziano wrote earlier this week.
The Cowboys aren’t the only team linked to Moore, as the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints have requested to interview him as well.
Should he be hired by Dallas or another organization, Moore would be the second church member currently at the helm of an NFL team, joining three-time Super Bowl champion Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Interestingly enough, Moore would not be the first Latter-day Saint head coach for the Cowboys. Dave Campo coached in Dallas from 2000-02, after converting to the faith during his stint at Weber State in the 1980s.
Moore’s Eagles are currently in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs and will host Puka Nacua’s Los Angeles Rams Sunday afternoon.
“I spent a lot of time (in Dallas), eight years there, so (I) have plenty of relationships in that place,” Moore told reporters Tuesday regarding the Cowboys’ coaching vacancy. “I love it here. I’ve had so much fun here. It’s been a really fun process, and we’re in a really special situation right now, getting the chance to play this Sunday, having a chance to make a run at this thing, and that’s really all you worry about. Everything else is what it is, and we’ll see where it takes you.”
