There’s a familiar last name on the Salt Lake Bees roster.
Cavan Biggio, the son of Baseball Hall of Fame member Craig Biggio, is now playing for the Bees, having joined the team on Aug. 6.
Biggio began the season with the Kansas City Royals, playing two months with the major league club before being sent down to Triple-A Omaha and then being released altogether two months after that.
The Los Angeles Angels then signed Biggio to a minor league contract and assigned him to Salt Lake, where he made his debut on Aug. 8 with a three-hit performance.
Since joining the Bees, the 30-year-old utility player has gotten five hits in eight at bats, good for a .625 average.
In 561 MLB games since debuting in 2019, Biggio has hit for a .223 average with 52 home runs and 190 RBI while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals.
Biggio’s father, Craig, played 20 seasons with the Houston Astros as arguably the greatest player in franchise history. He is one of 33 MLB players to reach 3,000 hits in his career, hitting for a lifetime .281 average with 291 home runs while winning five silver sluggers and four gold gloves. The elder Biggio was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
“My dad, he wasn’t around a lot when I was a kid, but whenever he was home for a home game, I would always want to go to the ballpark with him,” Biggio told MLB.com in 2018. “Allowing me and my brother to do that has had an impact from being around the game at the highest level, trying to learn from not just my dad, but other guys and how they prepare. That’s had an impact on my career because I’ve kind of had tastes since I was a kid of what it takes to be a major leaguer and stay a consistent major leaguer.”
