Cristiano Ronaldo has just done something fans weren’t sure would ever happen: he got engaged to longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez. She revealed the news and a can’t-miss ring on Instagram with the caption:

“Yes I do. In this and in all my lives.”

The couple’s romance began in 2016 at a Gucci store in Madrid where Rodriguez was working as a sales assistant. They began dating shortly after and took their relationship public in 2017. That same year, they welcomed their first child together. In 2022, they had twins, daughter Bella and son Ángel, but Ángel was stillborn.

Rodríguez has also helped raise Ronaldo’s other three children: Cristiano Jr. (born in 2010) and twins Eva and Mateo (born via surrogate in 2017).

On the pitch, Ronaldo is entering his fourth season with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, following legendary runs with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus. His career boasts five Ballon d’Or awards and five Champions League titles.

For years, the question of “When’s the wedding?” has followed the couple. A Sports Illustrated article from March 2025 noted that there has never been any public confirmation on their engagement but is a question that Rodriguez gets asked regularly.

In Netflix reality show “I Am Georgina,” Rodriguez explains in an interview that her friends teased her about not having a ring, “They’re always joking about the wedding. ‘When is the wedding?’ Since Jennifer Lopez’s song ‘The Ring Or When’ came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me.”

Ronaldo weighed in noting the couple will get married when there is a “click” and their lives have fallen into place, “I always tell her, ‘when we get that click.’ Like everything with our life, and she knows what I’m talking about. It could be in a year or it could be in six months or it could be in a month. I’m 1000% sure that it’ll happen.”

According to New York City gemologist and founder of The Clear Cut, Olivia Landau, Rodriguez’s ring is worth “several million dollars.”

“Features an oval diamond estimated to be over 10 carats, possibly as large as 15 carats,” Landau told Daily Mail.

She continued, “it appears to be flanked by two smaller oval diamond side stones, each approximately 2–3 carats. The setting is platinum with double claw prongs on all four corners."

Fan reactions

While many fans flooded the couple with congratulations, some Messi loyalists couldn’t resist a jab. “He just has to copy Messi in everything,” one wrote. “Because Messi got married, he’s also getting married lol he can’t fool me.”

The perils of a massive rock

A ring that size isn’t just a showstopper, it can be a safety risk. Experts warn that oversized rings can increase the risk of ring avulsion, a gruesome injury that happens if a ring gets caught and yanked, peeling skin and tissue from the bone. According to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the risk goes up if the ring is too large or heavy for the finger.

While rare, it’s happened, just ask Jimmy Fallon. In 2015, the late-night host tripped on a rug in his kitchen, grabbed a counter to break his fall, and his ring caught on the edge. The accident left him with a severe finger injury that required surgery.

Heavy rings can also cause swelling, discomfort, and unnecessary pressure on the finger, per Wedding Bands & Co. In other words: beautiful? Absolutely. Practical? Not always.
