The BYU football team has yet to begin its 2025 season, but a notable figure is already looking forward to the Cougars’ second contest of the campaign.

On Monday, the parody X account “Capt. Andrew Luck” wrote about the Sept. 6 game between BYU and the Stanford Cardinal. The post on X came after Stanford lost its season opener last Saturday to Hawaii on a last-second field goal.

“Dearest mother — The unit has returned to base camp. Drilling is underway for our next battle — a group of men who believe themselves to be Cougars. Fascinating," the post reads. “We plan to do exercises on our hands and knees to be as agile. We shall traverse the mountains to reach these large cat men. — Andrew.”

Who is Capt. Andrew Luck?

The Shorty Awards website describes the Capt. Andrew Luck X account thusly: “Captain Andrew Luck is a hilarious Twitter account dedicated to Andrew Luck, the former (Pro Bowl) QB for the Indianapolis Colts who retired abruptly weeks before the 2019 NFL season kicked off. This account imagines life from the all-star QB as a Civil War officer, writing home to tell his “Dearest mother” the latest news on his season.”

The account was created in 2015 and then discontinued in 2019 when Luck retired from the NFL, though a few posts were made at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. It was revived for a time in 2023 but no posts were made from December of that year until November of 2024 when Luck — a Stanford graduate — was named general manager of the Cardinal football team.

Luck has publicly stated that he doesn’t know who is behind the account but that he fully embraces it.

“I think people know it’s not me. It’s someone else, and this person has a much better sense of humor than I could ever have,” Luck told CBS last week. “I think it’s hilarious. I think it’s funny. I think a proper parody account that stays clean and that has proper humor is good for the internet, and I’m happy to help it in some way.”

BYU vs. Stanford

The Cougars and Cardinal are set to kick off on Sept. 6 at 8:15 p.m. MST at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. BYU will be coming off its season opener against Portland State, while Stanford will be coming off a bye this week.
