Juab had a strong opening day of the 3A boys wrestling state tournament on Wednesday in its quest for a 10th straight state championship, while the 3A girls state tournament is wide open after Day 1 at the Sevier Valley Center.
Juab’s boys advanced 14 wrestlers to Thursday’s semifinals and leads the 3A tourney with 126.5 points. Canyon View sits in second with 110 team points after advancing 10 to the semis.
Delta is in third place with 95.5 points.
Union’s Tucker Roybal heads into the final day of the season just two wins away from a fourth individual state title, while Juab’s Ladd Holman is chasing a three-peat on Thursday.
Juab’s Trevor Cowan, Juab’s Jet Abbott, Carbon’s Riker Ohearon and Canyon’s Alex Crawley are all seeking repeats.
On the girls side, a half a point is all that separates the top three teams, as Canyon View leads with 105 points, followed by Grantsville and Juab with 104.5 points.
Grantsville beat Juab by just two points in last year’s state tournament, and it’s looking like this year will be just as title.
