High school girls basketball: Tuesday’s 6A/5A first round recap, four higher-seed 5A teams advance

No. 16 Corner Canyon defeated No. 17 Herriman 56-40 in the first round of the Class 6A state tournament. The Chargers used a strong second quarter, outscoring Herriman 18-8, to build a comfortable lead by halftime. Aurayliah Tapusoa led Corner Canyon with 20 points, including three 3-pointers, while Jacey Yeomans added 17 points and also hit three 3-pointers. Grace Cannon led Herriman with 11 points. Corner Canyon advances to play No. 1 Westlake in the second round.
Bonneville outscored West Field 19-16 in the fourth quarter to secure a 59-51 victory in the 5A Playoffs. Baya Jimenez led Bonneville with 17 points, while Ema Eskelsen added eight points, including two 3-pointers. Meghan Peterson had a standout performance for West Field, scoring 30 points and making six 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Tahlia Munoz contributed nine points and three 3-pointers for the Longhorns.
No. 21 Skyline edged out No. 12 Woods Cross 35-34 in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. Estella Myers led Skyline with 12 points, including four 3-pointers, while Norah Pearce added eight points. Lucy Thompson led Woods Cross with 12 points as the Wildcats mounted a late 11-point fourth-quarter effort that fell just short. With the victory, Skyline advances to play No. 5 Alta in the second round.

Clearfield defeated Brighton 66-55 in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. Izzy Wyaskett was instrumental for Clearfield, scoring 25 points, while Ciara De La O added 16 points with four 3-pointers. Despite Sophie Nielsen scoring 33 points for Brighton, Clearfield secured a strong lead early with a 22-8 first-quarter advantage. Clearfield, the No. 11 seed, will advance to face No. 6 Wasatch in the second round.
Springville dominated Hillcrest 54-24 in the 5A Playoffs. Springville established a commanding lead early by outscoring the Huskies 19-3 in the first quarter. Sami Dellamas led the Red Devils with 12 points, while Halle Hall added eight points, including making two 3-pointers. Despite the loss, Emily Mandel scored a team-high nine points for Hillcrest.
Maple Mountain defeated Salem Hills 64-34 in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. The Golden Eagles built a commanding lead by outscoring the SkyHawks 19-7 in the second quarter. Taizley Ball led Maple Mountain with 13 points, while Shay Brown and Leah Bailey each added 12 points, with Brown and Bailey each making two 3-pointers. Kate Barton was the top scorer for Salem Hills with 14 points. Maple Mountain advances to face No. 7 Olympus in the second round.
Payson defeated Box Elder 53-29 in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. Payson’s Emmy Hales led all scorers with 21 points, while Makinley Renzello added 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Box Elder’s Ava Miles was the team’s top scorer with nine points. Payson, the No. 14 seed, advances to face No. 3 West in the second round.
No. 18 Timpview defeated No. 15 Hunter 48-37 in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. Cumorah Tupola and Jenay Namulauti each scored 13 points for Timpview, while Leah Atuaia added eight points. Grace Gallagher led Hunter with 11 points, but Timpview’s strong second-half performance, outscoring Hunter 31-22, secured the win. Timpview advances to face No. 2 Bountiful in the second round.
No. 20 Spanish Fork defeated No. 13 Granger 50-37 in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament. Spanish Fork outscored Granger 18-8 in the final quarter to secure the victory. Alexis Branch led Spanish Fork with 23 points and two 3-pointers, while Addison Gwilliam contributed 14 points. Granger’s Hoku Pili scored 21 points for the Lancers. Spanish Fork advances to play No. 4 Fremont in the second round.
