Zach Maine, Canyon View (Sr.)

Canyon View shot to the top of the Region 14 standings last week with a sweep of Delta, and Zach Maine played a big role in that success.

In the three wins over Delta, Maine hit .455 with a home run and three RBIs, while also earning the victory with seven strikeouts in Game 1 of the series, a 4-3 win.

“Zach is a three-year varsity starter and has played in a lot of big games for us. His leadership on the mound or in the field is huge for our team. He always has a smile no matter the situation and is a great teammate. I feel very fortunate to be able to be his coach the past four years,” said Canyon View coach Jason Jacobsen.

For the season, Maine has struck out 41 batters on the mound and he’s also record six doubles with 11 RBIs.


Softball

Ayzlee Sessions, West Field (Sr.)

West Field ran its winning streak to five straight last week, and senior Ayzlee Sessions has been a big part of that success.

In the past four games, she’s hit .533 with timely hits that have helped the Longhorns beat Fremont, Box Elder, Clearfield, Bountiful and Bonneville.

“Ayzlee is a force on both sides of the game. She can pop you with a single and burn you with her speed, or hit for power and fly around the bases. Then she takes the defense by storm and is a hitter’s menace by saving everything coming her way in left field,” said West Field coach Amanda Koford.

“Having her in the batter’s box or having a ball hit her way means that your team has a shot at something great happening. Not to mention that she is a great teammate and cheers on her fellow players at every turn.”

For the season, Sessions has recorded seven doubles, three triples and 15 RBIs.


Boys Soccer

Cameron Martin, Bountiful (Sr.)

Bountiful forward Cameron Martin came up huge last week in a big region game against Olympus. The senior notched two goals and an assist as the Redhawks slipped past the Titans for the 3-2 win to move into sole possessions of second place in Region 6.

“He is a dynamic player that has been an integral part of the team’s success and culture. He is a guy that you can count on when you need a spark. He has been involved in over half of all of our goals scored,” said Bountiful coach Gabe Johnson.

For the season, Johnson has notched 10 goals and five assists in 11 games.

Boys Volleyball

Brady Holt, Lone Peak (Jr.)

Junior outside hitter Brady Holt has been the best hitter for Lone Peak in what has been a strong season for the program.

The Knights own a 17-6 record this spring, with Holt leading the way with a .328 hitting percentage, with 207 kills on 454 attempts. He’s only had 66 errors.

“Brady is averaging over 14 kills per match for the last four matches, hitting .406 for that span and Lone Peak is ranked 40th in the country and third in Utah behind the team concepts of spreading the hits to many of our six pin hitters,” said Lone Peak coach Cecil Read. “Keeping up solid ball control and serving tough will be the answer going forward.”

Holt has also record 19 kills and is Lone Peak’s top passer with a 2.41.


Boys Track

Karter Groll, Rich (Sr.)

Karter Groll has played a big part in state championships already this school year for Rich’s football and boys basketball teams, and on the track this spring, he’s making big contributions as well.

Last week at the Skyhawk Invite at Spanish Fork, Groll finished first in the discus (127’09.50), third in the shot put (43’01) and fourth in the javelin (140’05). All three surpassed state qualifying marks.

He also ran a leg in the 4x400 relay.

“Karter Groll works hard and is a leader. He is willing to do whatever is asked. Along with throwing the shot, jav and discus, he is willing to do any other events. He loves to complete. He is a great athlete to coach and fun to be around,” said Rich coach Glenn Smith.

Groll’s top throws this year in the shot put and discus rank in the top four in 1A this spring.


Girls Track

Olivia Bassett, Millard (Sr.)

A three-sport athlete for Millard, Olivia Bassett is enjoying a strong spring track season as she puts the finishing touches on a strong high school career.

Last weekend at the Nyle Norris Invitational at Richfield, Bassett finished first in the 300 hurdles and high jump and then second in the 100 meters.

“What makes Olivia Bassett special isn’t just her talent, it’s her drive. She doesn’t just show up to race or jump; she shows up to compete. That kind of determination is contagious, and we are fortunate to have her on our track team,” said Millard coach Cody Moat.

In the five events she’s competed in this spring, Bassett ranks in the top five in 2A in all five: 100 meters (first), 200 meters (fifth), 100 hurdles (third), 300 hurdles (third) and high jump (second).

This school year, Bassett was named a 2A first team all-state in volleyball and honorable mention in basketball.


Boys Lacrosse

Kellen Torina, Alta (Jr.)

Kellen Torina’s dominance on the draw has played a huge role in Alta’s surge toward the top of 5A this spring.

His 69% on face-offs this spring, along with 112 ground balls. In last Friday’s win over East, the junior surpassed 500 face-off wins in his career.

“Kellen is a work horse, constantly working on ways to improve and does a lot on his own. He has a passion for what he does and leads by example of hard work all the while enjoying what he does,” said Alta coach Brandon Horoba. “Kellen is a great teammate and a great kid. You never see him without a smile on his face.”

In the win over East last week, he won 17 of 24 face offs (71%).


Girls Lacrosse

Rachel Turner, Salem Hills (Jr.)

An all-state second teamer last year, Rachel Turner is having another strong season for 9-2 Salem Hills this spring.

Last week she recorded six goals and three draw wins in a victory over Spanish Fork, and then also notched a goal and an assist in a win over Wasatch.

For the season, she’s recorded 29 goals on only 41 shots, along with 13 caused turnovers, 21 draw controls and 23 draw wins.

“Rachel Turner is a fearless and aggressive midfielder with terrific stick skills who is very tough to stop going to goal. Her toughness and tenacity are a huge asset in both are offensive and defensive transitions. She is a high level finisher with either hand,” said Salem Hills coach Cliff Yerkes.


Boys Tennis

Braeden Johnson, American Fork (Sr.)

Braeden Johnson, the defending 6A first singles state champ, hasn’t skipped a beat in his bid at a repeat.

Competing against some of the top players in the state, the senior has posted a 12-0 record this spring, including a pair of wins this past weekend at the Utah Valley Ashton Invitational.

“While balancing national tournaments with the school schedule Braeden has played some of the best players in the state this season while leading the team to the St. George Invite and the Utah Valley Ashton Invitational this past weekend,” said American Fork coach Jason Herrud.

“Braeden is a key member of the team who quietly leads by example and work ethic, he puts in a ton of time that inspires members of the team to embrace hard work and play more often together. He epitomizes the culture the team has been working to establish.

Last year’s Deseret News Mr. Tennis winner, Johnson has signed to play at BYU.


Girls Golf

Taya Snow, Morgan (Fr.)

Taya Snow has hit the ground running in her first season playing high school golf.

Through seven region events, the freshman leads 3A with a 79.43 scoring average, which is four shots lower than any other 3A golfer.

Last week at Round Valley Golf Course, she carded her low round of the season with a 73. She’s shot in the 70s in four of seven events this year.

“Taya is a great player, and it has been fun to have a freshman come in with the skills that she has. Her composure and mental toughness have added to our team chemistry. I am excited to have her for four years,” said Morgan coach Dennis Petersen.

Morgan’s last 3A state title came back in 2023, but led by Snow the Trojans own the best team scoring average in 3A this season.
