The Utah Mammoth have signed former New York Islanders captain Anders Lee to a three-year contract worth $5.4 million annually.
Lee, who turns 36 on Friday, has spent his entire 923-game NHL career with the Islanders. He has maintained consistent scoring throughout his career, annually producing roughly 20-30 goals and 45-60 points.
At 6-foot-3 and 234 pounds, Lee can play a heavy net-front game, not unlike Mammoth associate captain Lawson Crouse. His playoff experience makes him valuable, too — he went to the conference final in back-to-back seasons (2020 and 2021).
Having lost former alternate captain Alexander Kerfoot to the Nashville Predators in free agency Wednesday morning, the Mammoth are sure to use Lee in a leadership role, regardless of whether he wears a letter on his jersey.
Lee joins Vincent Trocheck as the second New York-based star to join the Mammoth Wednesday afternoon. Utah acquired Trocheck from the New York Rangers less than an hour earlier.
If Utah ever gets an NFL team, Lee could pull double duty: He was a star football player in high school, earning 2008 Minnesota Gatorade Football Player of the Year and Star Tribune All-Metro Player of the Year, while finishing as the runner-up for Minnesota’s “Mr. Football” award.
Who beat him to the latter? Former NFL cornerback Varmah Sonie.
