Across a Star-Spangled week, Salt Lake dropped its first home series of the year this past week, losing four of six to PCL first-half champions Las Vegas. Out of 21 total series in The Ballpark at America First Square’s history, this week marked only the fifth series defeat and first since September, 2025 against Tacoma. Despite the overall result on the week, it was an Independence Day to remember for the Bees, winning 9-1 on America’s 250th Birthday in front of a record-setting crowd on Saturday night.
Series recap
Las Vegas opened the series on Tuesday with a 10-6 win, behind an early 6-0 start to close out the month of June. Donning the Utah Dirty Sodas moniker on Wednesday, the Bees began July the right way with their fourth shutout victory of the season in a 4-0 result. George Klassen was spectacular, firing seven dominant innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.
A five-run second inning paced the Aviators to win Thursday’s game 8-4, while ninth inning heroics powered the visitors to an 11-9 slugfest victory on Friday. Salt Lake brought the fireworks early on the Fourth of July, using three two-run blasts to surge to a 9-1 patriotic victory. All 7,837 fans, the largest ever in Daybreak, were treated to a pitching masterclass from major leaguer Grayson Rodriguez on a rehab assignment, while also enjoying the biggest fireworks show of the campaign postgame.
With a chance to split the series, the Bees could not erase an early deficit, losing the finale 10-6, just as they did to start the six-game set. Salt Lake sits at 5-7 following the first two series of the second half, standing four games back of current leaders Las Vegas. A road series with Sacramento (3-9, 45-39) awaits as the final set before the All-Star Break.
Prospect watch
Ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Los Angeles Angels organization and the club’s top position player by MLB Pipeline, Nelson Rada continued to show why during Salt Lake’s latest series. The 20-year-old outfielder, now in his second season with the Bees, was named to the 2026 MLB All-Star Futures Game, becoming the first Salt Lake player selected since Nate Smith in 2016. Rada will represent the Angels alongside top prospect Tyler Bremner on the American League roster and is one of just two Pacific Coast League players selected for this year’s showcase.
The youngster finished the month of June hitting 30-for-83 (.361) with three doubles, 20 runs scored, 16 walks, nine RBI, and a team leading 11 stolen bases. Rada finished with just one error in the outfield in the month. In the series against the Aviators, Rada went 6-for-23 (.261) with a triple, five runs scored, four walks, an RBI and two stolen bases. He’ll look to continue his stellar efforts for likely half of the series in Sacramento before he heads to the city of brotherly love for a matchup with the NL’s top future ballplayers.
In his 14th start of the season, George Klassen, the Angels’ No. 4 prospect and No. 3 pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was masterful, earning Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career. The right-hander tossed a Triple-A career-high seven innings, his longest outing since throwing seven innings for Rocket City Sept. 10 of last season.
He also matched a career high with nine strikeouts, equaling his total from Aug. 29 with Rocket City, while allowing just three hits and one walk to earn his fourth win of the season. Through 14 starts, Klassen is 4-6 with a 4.38 ERA, 59 strikeouts, 36 walks, and has held opponents to a .253 batting average.
Ben Gobbel, an infielder from Georgia, continued his scorching start with the Bees after being promoted from Rocket City June 9, earning Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors. Along with George Klassen being named PCL Pitcher of the Week, Salt Lake swept the league’s weekly awards.
Gobbel appeared in all six games against Las Vegas, batting .435 (10-for-23) with four home runs, including one in each of the final three games of the series. He also drove in 12 runs, highlighted by a four-RBI performance in the series finale, while adding a double, four walks and two stolen bases. Through 22 games with Salt Lake, Gobbel is slashing .330/.400/.571 with a .971 OPS. He has collected 12 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs since his promotion and has quickly become one of the Bees’ hottest hitters.
Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez joined the Angels organization at the trade deadline in a deal that sent Taylor Ward to Baltimore. The Nacogdoches, Texas native spent parts of five seasons in the minors before making his Major League debut with the Orioles on April 5, 2023, and was assigned to Salt Lake to make a rehab start while recovering from low back inflammation.
Making his first Triple-A start since pitching for Norfolk in 2023, Rodriguez gave the Bees exactly what they needed. Working under a pitch count, the 6-foot-5 right-hander tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five and holding Las Vegas hitters to a .200 batting average. It was an encouraging outing as Rodriguez continues his rehab and prepares to rejoin the Angels.
Around the bases
The Bees celebrated Independence Day in style during their series against Las Vegas, winning their third straight game on July 4 in front of the largest crowd in franchise history. As the final out was recorded, four Apache helicopters soared over The Ballpark at America First Square in a perfectly timed flyover before fans were treated to the first of back-to-back nights of postgame fireworks on Friday and Saturday.
Salt Lake also debuted its America 250 look throughout the holiday weekend, wearing red, white and blue pinstriped jerseys paired with cream-colored caps featuring red, white and blue accents. The special uniforms and merchandise added to the festive atmosphere as the Bees capped off one of the biggest weekends of the season with packed crowds, patriotic celebrations and a series victory over the Aviators.
What’s on deck
The Bees head west to California’s state capital for the first time in 2026 to face the Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A, San Francisco Giants) ahead of the All-Star Break. The teams split their first 12 meetings of the campaign, all in South Jordan, and will begin a six-game series on Tuesday at 7:35 p.m. MDT from Sutter Health Park.
