Backup quarterback Treyson Bourguet hasn’t had much on-the-field playing time in his three years at BYU, but he’s found something much bigger.
Bourguet joined BYUtv Sports Nation’s “BYU Football with Kalani Sitake” on Tuesday, where he discussed the impact his time at BYU has had on him — and his faith.
“I feel like I’m living a totally different life, and that’s not even having anything to do with football,” he said. “It’s about who I’m surrounded with, the community I am in, what I prioritize in life.”
Bourguet transferred to BYU from Western Michigan in 2024. Until last week’s 63-7 blowout against Utah Tech, his only appearance came in the 2025 season opener — another blowout. Despite the return of QB1 Bear Bachmeier, Bourguet decided to stay in Provo.
Bourguet is not a member of the university’s sponsoring faith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but he previously described himself to the Deseret News as a “spiritual person.”
“Football is just a game,” he said Tuesday. “Football can do so much for us, but it’s what we can do with football that brings you real happiness. And I do believe that football has brought me closer to Christ. BYU has brought me closer to Christ.”
In March, Bourguet toured the Lindon Utah Temple during its public open house. He called it “incredible” in a post on X.
Also on X that same month, Bourguet thanked Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for the message he shared with the BYU football team.
On Tuesday, Bourguet expressed his gratitude for working toward a higher common goal alongside the same quarterbacks — both of different faiths — he has competed against the last three preseasons.
“I’m just eternally grateful for people like coach Kalani, and people like Jake Retzlaff and people like Bear Bachmeier, people that I can compete with every single day, day in and day out, and understanding that we’re trying to achieve the same goal,” he said. “We’re trying to be disciples of Christ through the game of football.”
