SOUTH SALT LAKE — An 18-year-old man was shot in the face in an apparent accidental shooting late Tuesday.

Police were called to the Mountain Shadows Apartments, 3761 S. Shadow Glen Lane (655 West), about 11:30 p.m. on a report of a shooting. Officers arrived to find an 18-year-old shot in the cheek, said South Salt Lake Police detective Gary Keller.

Amazingly, the bullet did not strike any vital organs, he said.

“He is very lucky,” Keller said.

The man was conscious, breathing and alert when he was transported to a local hospital, in serious condition, according to Keller.

An 18-year-old man was handling the gun when it went off, striking his friend.

Keller said as of Wednesday afternoon, investigators did not anticipate asking prosecutors to file any charges, saying the incident appears to be a complete accident.
