MOAB, Grand County — A couple visiting from Ohio was struck and killed while crossing a road in Moab on Thursday night, police said.

The man and woman, described as elderly, were crossing the road in the area of 540 South outside of a designated crosswalk when a southbound vehicle hit them about 9 p.m., Moab police said in a statement.

They were both declared dead on scene. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members.

After the crash, the driver of the vehicle “immediately pulled into a hotel parking lot to await law enforcement,” police said. The driver had been driving at or less than 35 mph, which is the speed limit in the area, according to the statement.

The driver was uninjured in the crash.

“This is a tragic accident and our thoughts are with those involved and the families of the deceased,” police said in the statement.

Main Street was closed between Kane Creek and 500 West for several hours while the crash was investigated.
