OGDEN — Ogden police shot and injured a man Tuesday night after they say he threatened officers with a handgun and a butcher knife.

At about 7 p.m., dispatchers received a call from a case worker claiming an 18-year-old man was inside a house near the 800 block of 5th Street in Ogden, armed with a shotgun and threatening to kill himself, Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt said during a news conference late Tuesday night.

While officers were responding, dispatch received another call that two people were fighting with the man, who Watt said was still armed with a shotgun. As police arrived and set up a perimeter around the house, two people exited and began relaying information to officers.

It was then, Watt said, that the man “came out of the back door of the house with a handgun in one hand and a butcher knife in the other.”

“The suspect advanced rapidly on an officer at the rear of the house,” Watt said. “The officer retreated while yelling to stop the suspect’s advance, but was unsuccessful in doing so. The officer fired several rounds from a department issued pistol, striking the suspect once in the abdomen.”

Officers rendered first aid to the man, who was transported by Ogden Fire Department personnel to a local hospital in “good condition,” Watt said.

The officer who shot the man, who has been placed on administrative leave per department policy, was not hurt during the incident, according to police.

The investigation is being handled by the Weber County Attorney’s Office critical incident response team. Watt said the officer’s body camera was turned on during the shooting.
