SPANISH FORK — A man died Saturday afternoon in a construction accident in Spanish Fork, police said.
The accident occurred about 4:40 p.m. at 1000 S. High Ridge Drive when a trench collapsed on the man, who was excavating for a construction company, said Spanish Fork Police Sgt. Phil Nielsen.
The man’s co-workers managed to partially dig him out of the trench by the time emergency responders arrived, Nielsen said.
“He was conscious and talking when responders first arrived, but his condition rapidly got worse,” Nielsen said.
The man died of his injuries at Utah Valley Hospital from compression injuries. He was a 36-year-old from Spanish Fork, Nielsen said, but his identification has not yet been released.
Because it was a work-related accident, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating and will work with the police department to determine whether safety protocols were followed, Nielsen said.
