TOOELE — A man with a history of violence against women faces new charges in a disturbing case of domestic violence.
Darrell John Cabrera, 32, of Tooele, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault causing serious injury, a second-degree felony; two counts of aggravated assault and assault, both third-degree felonies; and two counts of assault, a class A misdemeanor.
On Nov, 29, police say Cabrera became jealous because a woman received a text from another man. Cabrera took the woman to his residence where he asked, “Where do you want to get it?” according to the charging documents.
“What he meant by this was whether the victim wanted him to hit her in the face or the ribs,” the charges state.
Cabrera is accused of then punching the woman in the ribs and choking her until she lost consciousness.
“Over the course of the next three hours, (Cabrera) continuously assaulted her. He threatened to slit her throat with a knife he had. He also told the victim that she was not going to leave his residence alive while he stroked her face and neck with the knife blade. (Cabrera) put out a cigarette on or around the victim’s eye,” according to the charges.
Just after midnight on Nov. 30, when Cabrera fell asleep, the woman sneaked out of the residence and called police.
The Nov. 29 incident happened while Cabrera was out of jail on pretrial release from another violent criminal case. In August, he was charged in Tooele County with rape and forcible sodomy, both first-degree felonies; aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; and unlawful detention, a class B misdemeanor.
In that August case, Cabrera invited a woman to his house and “became angry with the victim after consuming a large amount of alcoholic beverages and started hitting her with his fists,” according to charging documents.
He then handcuffed himself to the woman and “began to drag her around the house,” the charges state. Cabrera then raped the woman and choked her until she lost consciousness, according to police. The woman woke with Cabrera sitting over her, allegedly “complaining that he broke his hand from hitting (her).”
The latest assault also allegedly happened while Cabrera was awaiting sentencing in yet another domestic violence case, according to court records.
On Nov. 2, Cabrera was convicted of aggravated assault producing a loss of consciousness, a third-degree felony, in Duchesne County’s 8th District Court. In that case, Cabrera choked a woman and broke her arm, according to charging documents.
On Tuesday, Cabrera was given a suspended prison sentence in that case and was ordered to serve 60 days in jail and three years of probation.
