VERNAL — A 16-year-old boy was treated for a dog bite and taken into custody following a confrontation with police that resulted in at least one officer firing a shot.
About 11:10 p.m., Vernal police officers and Uintah County sheriff’s deputies were called to assist in “making contact” with a person on probation.
“They encountered the probationer, who had his hands concealed around his waist. An officer believed the individual had a weapon. When the individual advanced on the officer, a K-9 was deployed and engaged the suspect. Shots were fired by at least one officer,” according to a prepared statement from the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff's office stated Friday afternoon that a Vernal officer fired “shots.”
“No one was struck by the officer’s shots,” according to the statement.
The boy was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a dog bite before being booked into the Split Mountain Youth Detention Center in Vernal, according to the statement. The teen was already on probation with the state Division of Juvenile Justice Services. His name was not released.
Main Street from 500 West to 700 West in Vernal was closed until further notice. Detectives from Utah County were called to investigate the shooting and were en route to Vernal Friday morning.
