VINEYARD — An attempted home invasion robbery in Vineyard resulted in one of the would-be robbers being shot and killed by the resident and at least six others arrested, according to police.
About 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to the Concord at Geneva apartments, 125 N. Mill Road. The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that one man had been shot to death during a home invasion robbery.
Four homeless people have been arrested for investigation of robbery: Baboucarr Trawally, 27; Diego Fuentez, 18; Gabriel Little Hawk Trane, 21; and Sarh Sone Jabbah, 18. A total of four males and two females were taken into custody, according to a police affidavit.
Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon confirmed Wednesday that two teenagers were also taken into custody and booked into the Slate Canyon Detention Center. One was arrested for investigation of robbery, and the other had a warrant for being a runaway, he said.
Additional charges could be filed against all the adults and teens as more evidence is collected during the investigation, Cannon said.
The name of the man killed was not immediately released, as police say they still do not know his identity beyond a first name.
Cannon said the home invasion was a targeted attack.
After interviewing the people arrested, sheriff’s detectives learned that the group traveled from Salt Lake City to Vineyard “to rob and assault the intended resident,” the affidavit states.
The suspects believed that the homeowner had drugs and had also assaulted a female friend, according to police.
“The plan was to assault the male resident, in revenge, and steal his narcotics. During the robbery attempt one of the lead male suspects was shot by the resident,” the affidavit states.
Trane and Fuentez “both admitted their friend got shot in their presence and they tried to help him. Both became visibly emotional when speaking about it,” according to the affidavit. “They admitted they thought their friend was deceased and got scared. They left their friend behind and fled the scene in the vehicle.”
Based on the evidence collected Tuesday night, Cannon said the man who fired the fatal shot appeared to be acting in self-defense.
“On the face of it, that’s what it looks like,” he said.
The resident was not arrested. However, a follow-up interview with the man and his attorney was scheduled for Wednesday. Cannon said detectives “want to take a deliberate approach and make sure we don’t jump to conclusions that are wrong.”
Cannon said police were also looking for additional people who were involved. Investigators believe they are looking for more than one person, but did not have a confirmed number as of Wednesday.
