EAGLE MOUNTAIN — A child is in critical condition after being accidentally shot in the back of the head with a BB gun Monday night.

A 6-year-old boy and his 12-year-old brother were playing with BB guns at their Eagle Mountain home when the gun went off while the older boy held it, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

“It appears to be accidental. But it was a pump-style BB gun, and, depending on how much it’s been pumped, they can pack a little more punch than the regular BB guns,” said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

Cannon said it appears the BB bounced off the ground before hitting the younger boy.

He was flown to a local hospital in critical condition.
