Unified police detective Mark Utley paints a playroom at the Family Support Center’s LifeStart Village, a self-sufficiency housing program for homeless single-parent families, in Midvale on Wednesday. Utley, who organized the project, plans to paint clouds on the ceiling and cartoon characters on the walls. At the LifeStart Village, single parents and their children move from homelessness or near homelessness into safe, stable housing where they develop the necessary skills to create a stable, nurturing environment. The Unified Police Department is a long-term supporter of the Family Support Center, bringing food and treats to the families living there to donating their time to the upkeep of the property.
