KAMAS — A 10-year-old boy died Wednesday evening after he was shot in the chest, police say.
Few details were available, but the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened in a home just outside of Kamas off of state Route 248. Deputies responded to a call just before 6 p.m. First responders tried to provide medical assistance, but the child was pronounced dead.
“We don’t have a lot of information about how or why this happened. Preliminary information that we are gathering at this point so far has pointed to it being an absolutely tragic accident,” said Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright.
Details surrounding how the firearm was accessed and how it discharged are still being investigated and were unavailable Wednesday, according to Wright.
“Our hearts are broken and we mourn with the family of the little boy. We ask for privacy for the family while they grieve this tragic loss,” a news release from the sheriff’s office asked.
