KEARNS — Police have identified a woman killed Friday evening in a crash in Kearns.
Cecilia Ruby Chavez, 37, of Magna, was driving south on 5600 West when she hit another car that was turning north onto the road from a parking lot about 8 p.m., according to Unified police.
Officers had been meeting with a 26-year-old woman at Jefferson Junior High, 5830 S. 5600 West, and when they finished, she attempted to turn onto 5600 West when the crash occurred, said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray.
“She went to leave the school, she drove out on 5600 West to go northbound and did not see a southbound vehicle coming,” Gray said, “and that southbound vehicle T-boned her (car).”
Chavez was driving south with a 14-year-old female passenger. Chavez died at the scene.
“She was extricated from the car by the officers who were on scene and witnessed the accident,” Gray said Friday night. “They attempted CPR in an attempt to save her life. The 14-year-old female is in serious condition.”
The 26-year-old was listed in critical condition as of late Friday night
The cause of the crash has not been released, but police said Friday that alcohol was not suspected as a factor.
