SOUTH SALT LAKE — A vehicle crashed through a South Salt Lake apartment Friday afternoon, pinning a 12-year-old girl between the car and the debris of what was once a living room.
About 2:15 p.m. a Hyundai sedan was turning into the parking lot of an apartment complex at 331 E. Summer Pine Lane (about 3400 South) when the vehicle crashed into the side of a first-floor apartment, smashing out of the apartment’s front door, according to South Salt Lake Police spokeswoman Danielle Croyle.
A family was at home in the apartment when the car ripped through it, and a 12-year-old was pinned between the car and debris, Croyle said.
“Fire had to extricate her,” she said. “And she was transported to the hospital in critical condition.”
The female driver of the car was also taken to the hospital, and medical personnel treated several other children at the scene, she said.
The car severed a gas line, forcing police and firefighters to evacuate the apartment building. Fire officials dealt with the gas leak and damage to the pipes, and they were also working to determine whether or not the structure was stable enough to allow residents to return, Croyle said.
Investigators were also trying to determine what caused the driver to collide with the apartment building.
