KEARNS — At least three people were shot in Kearns Tuesday afternoon, leaving one dead and two injured, Unified police confirmed.
The incident started as an altercation between two parties — one in a red Saturn and the other in a black BMW — sometime before 4 p.m. in a church parking lot in the area of 5300 West and 5400 South, police said.
The argument eventually escalated, turning into gunfire that left the driver of the BMW dead and one of the car’s occupants injured, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said Tuesday.
The driver of the BMW continued forward after being shot, crashing into a wall on the south end of the church parking lot. Rivera said the Saturn then fled the scene with at least four people inside.
That’s when at least one person exited the BMW, carjacking the driver of a white Dodge Charger in the north side of the parking lot and shooting them in the process, Unified detective Kevin Hansen said.
Hansen said it’s possible another person from the BMW was involved in the carjacking.
Police also think one of the people involved may have jumped a fence on the south end of the parking lot near the BMW, where the red Saturn then picked them up.
“There is a blood trail from the crime scene that went over a fence,” Rivera said.
Police were searching for the Dodge and the Saturn Tuesday.
“We’re still trying to put the pieces together,” said Rivera. “This is really a tragic situation when it occurs in a neighborhood like this.”
Aerial footage from KSL’s Chopper 5 showed the black BMW with its lights flashing near a dumpster in the church parking lot. Police had the parking lot completely roped off.
