Two boys were injured in a suspected drive-by shooting in Sandy on Friday.
Police say despite multiple shots being fired, both boys — ages 12 and 14 — were expected to survive.
The incident happened about 5:15 p.m. near 8800 South and 200 East. Two boys were walking along the sidewalk when police say both were shot. Based on surveillance video collected from the nearby Historic Sandy TRAX station and from witnesses, Sandy Police Sgt. Clay Swensen said detectives believe a white vehicle, possibly a Volkswagen, was involved.
Swensen said video surveillance recorded the vehicle speeding away from the area about the same time as the shooting, and several witnesses also reported to police that they saw the vehicle leaving the area in a hurry.
How many times each boy was shot and the extent of their injuries was not released Friday.
Swensen said both boys are from Midvale and have no known connection to the neighborhood or the house they were shot in front of. Police were still investigating Friday where the boys were headed, what they were doing prior to the shooting, and what interaction they may have had with the suspect vehicle, he said.
“We hate to see these young kids involved in these types of incidents,” Swensen said.
Whether the incident was gang-related will be part of the investigation, he said.
