A 44-year-old deliveryman confessed to the serial murders of three prostitutes and shooting of two transvestites, and he is a suspect in four other killings, police said Friday.

James Antonio Barnes was arrested Thursday following a task force investigation into the shootings, Deputy Police Chief Fred Warner said at a news conference.Warner said the victims were shot with a .32 automatic pistol.

The Memphis man faces charges of first-degree murder in the killings of Sharon Denise Moore, 25, who was found dead Aug. 18; Loria Ann Deberry, 28, who was killed Oct. 5; and Joyce Thomas, 37, who was found dead Oct. 31, Warner said.

Barnes also faces aggravated assault charges in the shootings of Tony Lee Thompson, 23, Oct. 25, and Eric Lewis on Nov. 5, Warner said.
